Ma. Theresa “Marite” Samaniego Castro
Born on March 4, 1958, Marite is the daughter of Filipina artist, Nida Alcoseba Samaniego. As a young person growing up under the mentorship of her mother, Marite had her first exposure to the art world during one of her mother’s major exhibit at the Davao Insular Hotel in 1970. Subsequently, she helped her mother during summer art lessons wherein Marite taught basic sketching.
After college, while opting to work in the corporate world, the lure to paint was always in her heart, and in 2005, Marite seriously pursued her interests. Strongly attracted to realism, architectural works in watercolor and ink, and hyper realism, she took online courses to be able to develop and improve her craft. Her style is mainly influenced by the old masters JMW Turner and John Singer Sargent, to contemporary artists Alex Hillkurtz, Andrew Tischler, and Ottorino de Lucchi. Her paintings have stories to tell as she paints mostly about places she has visited, beautiful destinations in the Philippines, and even objects that have special meaning.
In all her paintings, she hopes to convey joy, encouragement and hope. Many say that when they first glance at her paintings, they think they are “photographs”. She continues to evolve and progress, always wanting to learn new techniques in hyper realism, both in oil and watercolor.
Marite lives in Metro Manila with her daughter, Carissa, and granddaughter, Zoe.
