The constant high-speed flow of information in our technology-driven world  coupled with the pandemic and its consequences have impacted people’s minds and relationships that feelings of stress, depression and isolation are prevalent. It is my prayer that as I have been given this artistic expression, I can reflect creativity that can bring out positive effects of hope, encouragement, and joy in these challenging times. In striving for realism, I hope that people would derive inspiration on the beauty that is still around us.

“In a time when increasing number of artists and galleries are preferring abstracts over realistic painting, these paintings by Bijoux’s mother and grandmother are a refreshing change… Her watercolor paintings of the El Hogar building and San Agustin Church in vibrant colors are extremely captivating and depict these iconic landmarks in a completely different light.”

“…Also to be found are the vibrant richness of life studies that bring the power of dance, the serenity of a lake and the beauty of a bird to life, while rounding out the exhibition is a selection of oil paintings, one paired with the bird the other three hanging together as a eye-catching trio among a hall of eye-catching pieces that carry with them a depth of realism that is genuinely exquisite.”

Ma. Theresa “Marite” Samaniego Castro

Born on March 4, 1958, Marite is the daughter of Filipina artist, Nida Alcoseba Samaniego. As a young person growing up under the mentorship of her mother, Marite had her first exposure to the art world during one of her mother’s major exhibit at the Davao Insular Hotel in 1970. Subsequently, she helped her mother during summer art lessons wherein Marite taught basic sketching.

After college, while opting to work in the corporate world, the lure to paint was always in her heart, and in 2005, Marite seriously pursued her interests. Strongly attracted to realism, architectural works in watercolor and ink, and hyper realism, she took online courses to be able to develop and improve her craft. Her style is mainly influenced by the old masters JMW Turner and John Singer Sargent, to contemporary artists Alex Hillkurtz, Andrew Tischler, and Ottorino de Lucchi. Her paintings have stories to tell as she paints mostly about places she has visited, beautiful destinations in the Philippines, and even objects that have special meaning.

In all her paintings, she hopes to convey joy, encouragement and hope. Many say that when they first glance at her paintings, they think they are “photographs”. She continues to evolve and progress, always wanting to learn new techniques in hyper realism, both in oil and watercolor.

Marite lives in Metro Manila with her daughter, Carissa, and granddaughter, Zoe.
